After putting aside money for a while, I have finally ordered the Really Right Stuff Ball Head (BH-40) and L-Bracket for my Nikon D700. I first noticed this set-up watching some of Joel Grimes’ videos on his website and just fell in love with the power of this. What drew me to this set-up was his ability to switch quickly from landscape to portrait without having to make a single adjustment to the tripod. I shoot mostly off the tripod, because lets face it, you get a sharper photo this way. I often switch back and forth from landscape to portrait and back. With my current setup with the Manfrotto pan-tilt head, I need to raise the tripod about 6″, then tilt the head 90º to the left, then recenter the tripod on my subject – about 4″ to the right. Then, when I want to switch back, I do all that in reverse. Also, when I am in portrait mode, the tripod becomes somewhat unbalanced – and I’ve never liked that feeling. Though it was a ton of cash to throw down, this will really clean up my shooting process. Go to minute 14:30 in this video to see it in action.
