RAW Edit - Week 1

Click to download RAW file

Deadline: Friday March 23, 2012

Well, I have already received a ton of feedback from people interested in the RAW challenge, so I am just going to run with it.

Here is how this is going to work.  Each week, I will upload a single (and hopefully unique) RAW file (NEF off a Nikon D700) for you to edit in your own style.  Some weeks I will give you models to work with, some weeks nature, some weeks architecture…. you get the point.  Be crazy (HDR/DRI), be gentle (B&W/Color/etc), it’s all up to you.  Really hoping to get a wide array of results and knowledge dumping.

Once you have completed your edits, email them to me at raylarose@me.com and I will post them all at the end of the week.  Please give a quick overview of what you did to make the edit.  Send to me as a JPG with the longest edge being 2000px.

This weeks download is a shot of a bicycle I took in Orlando, FL with my Nikon D700 and Carl Zeiss 100mm lens.  The ZIP file is 14MB in size and is a Nikon RAW image.  If you have Photoshop, there should be no issue opening it.

Very curious to see what you come up with!

This is probably one of my favorite photo’s that you have taken to date. Frankly I wouldn’t mess with perfection, really. The photo is exquisite. The lighting, the composition, the subject, the angles and cropping. It all is seemingly in perfect sync. The one tiny, and when I say tiny I mean minuscule, issue that I see after looking at the printed photo in my house is the texture in the foreground is a tad bit muddy. With all the light going on in other areas it’s only natural that an area falls to shadow, so to speak, and the texture of the stone, in my humble opinion, is just dying to play a larger role. Now I don’t remember the exact terms that would be appropriate here and I will save myself the embarrassment by just saying I would lighten up the stone and give that stone a little life. There is so much wonderful texture happening in other areas it seems, to me, that it would only enhance the richness that is already happening.

Yeah – and I think this is a great part of the challenge – tacking the lighting and textures in different ways. Thanks so much for your encouragement here!

That’s fantastic – I look forward to it – and your wedding shots have been AMAZING lately. Blown away by that latest one with the couple on a pier. Great color to it.

    Cool idea Ray,
Well I will try to do something with this one, if I don’t have time Il will check the next RAW ;-))
PS:The idea for me will be a pseudo HDR to bring more details in shadows and to enhance the colors and details and finally why not to play with textures ;-)

Well, you already have my result in your hands, well rather on your computer. I am looking forward to see the results of others soon. It is interesting to see what others make of a scene.

P.S.: Did you find my signature in the version I’ve send you? *g*

    Hey Ray,

What a beautiful shot to begin with! And of course, my curiosity was drawn to the bike sitting there quietly in the shadow. . .
Thanks for the opportunity to “play.”

[...] I was asked in an email this week to show the power of ACR7 with the new Process Version (PV) 2012 engine. The only edits here are to the center “slice” using nothing but ACR7′s sliders for temp, exposure, contrast, highlights and shadows.  As you can see, it does an amazing job recovering shadow details – much better than ACR6 (PV 2010) was able to do.   It retains a ton of depth and detail which ACR6 didn’t do so well with (ACR6 made it very flat).  You can see the original RAW here.
